Most natural diamonds formed more than a billion years ago. Deep in the Earth’s mantle, carbon crystallised under intense heat and pressure. Ancient geological processes later carried diamond-bearing rock towards the surface.
Mining and recovery bring rough diamonds into view. Depending on the deposit, diamonds may be recovered from diamond-bearing rock or from alluvial deposits. The recovered stones begin their journey through the diamond industry.
Rough diamonds are sorted by characteristics such as size, shape, colour and quality. Specialists study each crystal to understand its possibilities before it moves towards cutting and polishing.
Cutters study the rough crystal and its inclusions, often using scanning and 3D planning. A cutting plan balances shape, clarity, light performance and weight retention. The rough is then sawn or laser-cut and shaped for the next stage.
Skilled polishers shape and refine the facets on a polishing wheel. Their precision gives the diamond its proportions, symmetry and finish, helping light reflect through the stone and reveal its brilliance.
Gemological laboratories examine natural diamonds and document their characteristics in grading reports. Colour, clarity, carat weight and relevant cut information help buyers understand the stone. Report details vary by laboratory and service.

A grading report documents a diamond’s assessed characteristics. The information and services vary by laboratory and report type. Ask for the laboratory name, report number and relevant disclosures for the specific stone. A grading report is not a price quotation or a monetary appraisal.
